Their evening meal was a quiet, subdued affair. The Yellows attended the Lady of Ravenak, who sat opposite her brother and next to her master of arms. Colonel Gunilaz sat stiffly erect and was obviously uncomfortable in the presence of the fake scaled humans, Sammy and Lucy. Sa Kamizan also sat straight and assumed a haughty air, although, under the table, his clawed foot rested on top of Lucy’s smaller foot as she sat beside him. She prepared to be amused by the interplay between the Blue males. Sa Kamizan was too good a politician to be ruffled by the poorly concealed hostility of the older Blue male. Neither Raven nor Sammy looked happy, but Sammy eyed the dishes of food hungrily. As usual, Reds were not invited to the table.

The food was plentiful. Veela explained their arrangements for surviving the siege. They had a vegetable garden on the level below the battlements, which was concealed from the main entrance below. Water was diverted into the garden from streams flowing down the mountain. Dried, and sometimes, fresh meat was available when the Reds went hunting. Secret tunnels led from the main Fortress down to a wild valley inhabited by game animals.

Part way through the meal, Lucy felt a nudge on her leg and suspected the attentions of her mate. But, glancing down she found the narrow head of the small dragon, Hunter, resting on her knee. She patted the scaled neck and caught a glance from her mate. He leaned back to peer under the table, while the dragon moved closer, curling its long tail around Sa Kamizan’s sturdy leg. He gave a grunt of amusement and murmured to Lucy, “I suppose you would like to bring a dragon back to Eden.”

Lucy laughed at the idea, saying in her mischievous way, “Yes, I can just imagine the alarm of the Governors at seeing a dragon lizard accompanying us.”

“Lucy, you are incorrigible,” he said. His severe tone was belied by the playful gleam in his eyes. “You have no respect for our Governors.”

“No more than they deserve,” she retorted. “They feel comfortable with your suave manners and dislike my frankness. But, I’ll admit they have been generous with the Atrapako.”
